The Last Yztari is a hybrid documentary about trauma, disability, creativity, and rebuilding one’s identity.
It follows Mary Dague, an Army veteran who lost both arms while defusing a bomb in Iraq. After struggling for years to write directly about her experiences, Mary began creating a science-fiction world in which fictional characters could carry pieces of her trauma. The documentary blends her real life with animation, gaming, artificial intelligence, and scenes inspired by her novel.
At its heart, the film explores how imagination and storytelling can help people process experiences that may be too painful to describe directly. It also examines caregiving, PTSD, relationships, digital identity, and what it means to reclaim agency after life-changing trauma. The film is especially relevant to the brain injury community because it presents recovery as complex, personal, and creative—not as a simple “inspirational” journey.
